Following are excerpts from a letter written by Davidson McCampbell to his sister, Susan McCampbell. The original is in the possession of Majorie McCampbell-Etchell. Spelling and punctuation, etc., has been left "as is" in hopes of retaining the "flavor" of the original.
Nashville Tenn Apr 20 63
.......We came from Chicago to Tenn and took up our camp on the east bank of the Cumberland River. the weather is very warm here. Now the peach & apple trees are out in bloom and evry thing looks nice.
.......We have five hundred men in our Reg now but getting smaller evry day. The Reb is out in force between here and murfreesboro. we can hear heavy cannonading in that direction evry day. The caverly has skirmishes evry day with the rebs. We do not know how long we will stay here. Some of the Companies are guarding trains on the R.R. and some guarding the contraband at work but the Reg was in line of battle all night and the orders is this morning to be ready to move camp at any min. but that is nothing strange......
All I ask is to keep my health and I think I will out all right. Hoping to hear from you soon I remain your ever
